Maarten de Brauwer: Time to stop mucking around?
Scientist and researcher Maarten de Brauwer is studying the impact that divers and photographers have on the marine environment. His most recent paper Time to stop mucking around? Impacts of underwater photography on cryptobenthic fauna found in soft sediment habitats was published in the Journal of Environmental Management earlier this year. In this article, he kindly provides a synopsis of his research and some guidelines about ways in which underwater image makers can help avoid inadvertent environmental damage.
Donations being accepted for victims of Palu Earthquake and Tsunami

An aircraft from the Indonesian airforce will deliver everything that we can collect to Palu on Saturday 06 October. Girls that Scuba announces female only underwater photo competition
Girls That Scuba has announced their first female-only underwater photography competition. The competition is accepting entries from September 13th to October 13th 2018. There are four categories for the competition: Beginner, Macro, Wide Angle, and Videography. One prize per category will be awarded, including a Red Sea live aboard trip with Emperor Divers.
Results: 2018 SoCal Shootout
The results of the 2018 SoCal Shootout have been announced. It took place from 14 to 16 September 2018 with participants diving throughout Southern Californian waters. Congratulations to Josh Musselwhite for his winning image and to all entrants and finalists.
Aquatica announces housing for Sony a7r Mark III
Aquatica has announced (PDF) their housing for the Sony a7r Mark III. It features spring loaded and set centering controls, along with an AF-ON butting that can be accessed while the user also releases the shutter. There is a new method of using the camera’s joystick and strobe triggering options include Nikonos, Ikelite or optical connections.
California State Parks debuts first underwater trail
California’s first underwater trail opens to the public on October 1st in Lake Tahoe. The underwater trail consists of four dive sites comprised of several historic small watercraft. California State Parks and the Sierra State Parks Foundation established the underwater trails. “This collection is the largest, most diverse group of sunken small watercraft of its kind, in their original location, known to exist in the nation.”
Panasonic announces two full frame mirrorless cameras
Panasonic has announced that it has developed 2 full frame mirrorless cameras: the 47MP S1R and the 24MP S1. Both cameras will be capable of 4K 60p video, feature Dual I.S. image stabilization systems, Leica L lens mounts and two memory card slots (1 XQD and 1 SD). Panasonic has also announced plans for 10 new full frame lenses.
ikelite updates fiber optic converter
Ikelite has announced the third generation of their fiber optic converter for DS strobes. In common with the preceding version, this converts the electrical bulkhead of any Ikelite DS strobe into a fiber optic port and is extra sensitive for use with internal LED triggers
