Sea turtle hatchlings spotted on Mumbai beach for first time after 2-year clean-up
Olive Ridley sea turtle hatchlings have been spotted for the first time in decades on a Mumbai beach that has been tirelessly cleared of debris by local volunteers. The sea turtles were spotted in the past week, and at least 80 of them made their way to the ocean from their sand nests. Versova Beach was lead in clean-up efforts by lawyer Afroz Shah over two-years ago and has seen what the United Nations describes as the “world’s largest beach cleanup project.” Olive Ridley sea turtles are the most common sea turtle in the ocean, but are still listed as a vulnerable species.

The findings are suprising as scientists long believed the brains of sea turtles were too small to learn tasks such as using their flippers for manipulating prey in addition to locomotion.
