The March/April edition of Underwater Photography Magazine (UwP) is now available. It features interviews with the winners of UPY 2016 and Martin Edge, the winning images of Ocean Art 2016, Alex Mustard talks about his new book, ideas about shooting squid by Dan Bolt, Lord Howe Island by Scott Portelli, South Africa’s KwaZulu Natal coast by Tom Burd and the sardine shoals of Moaboal.
Book release: Underwater Photography Masterclass by Alex Mustard
Wetpixel Associate Editor and well-known underwater photographer, Alex Mustard, has announced the publication of his new instructional book. Alex’s aim with Underwater Photography Masterclass is not only to detail techniques that should improve images, but to also contribute to the reader’s understanding of how those techniques work. Alex promises that the book is “packed with techniques, tips and ideas”.
Behind the Shot: The sheep family
Yansu Junk, divemaster at Matahari Tulamben Dive Resort, has shared a photo of three Shaun the Sheep nudibranchs on the Wetpixel Facebook page that has turned out to be very popular. Here Yansu shares with us how he got the shot and the settings he used.
Study Shows Reefs May Survive Climate Change
A new paper published in Nature suggests that climate change may not have the devastating effect on corals that has been predicted. Scientists documented the regeneration of 21 reefs in the Seychelles that had been largely killed off during the coral beaching episode of 1998. The study shows that by 2011, 12 of the reefs had recovered to pre 1998 levels.
Photographers Shoot 4 x 5 Large Format Underwater
PetaPixel has posted an article about Ian and Erick Regnard who are shooting 4 x 5 Polaroid images underwater. The Mauritian photographers have designed and built a specific camera and rig in order to capture their images. Perhaps most awkward is the fact that they can only shoot one image at a time before needing to add a new frame on the boat. All images by Ian and Erick Regnard.
Vivid-Pic announces Restore
Vivid-pix has released a Windows app that automatically enhances images from scanned slides or prints. It utilizes the same technology as that of their Vivid-Pix Scuba enhancement app.
Results of Our World Underwater 2016 announced
The results of the 2016 Our World Underwater imaging contest have been announced. The stunning winning images and videos were selected from thousands of entries from around the globe. Congratulations to Fabien Michenet for his amazing image that was awarded best of Show, and to all the other winners. The winners will share a prize purse of $55,000.
Call for entries: Canary Islands Dive Photo Challenge
The Canary Islands has launched their first online underwater photo contest. In order to participate, entrants must submit images taken at any time in the “sea beds of the Canary Islands.” There are Pro and Amateur classes and categories for Portfolios, Diving, Wildlife, Wide-Angle and Macro. The contest runs from 18 December through to 19 May 2016 and there are cash prizes for the winning entries.
