Dutch and Zeeuws Open Championships announced
Over two dates in 2011, 15 May and 26 June, the annual Open Dutch (ODC) and the Zeeuws Championship (ZC) underwater photography competitions will be held. The two splash-in style contests will be run simultaneously over the two dates in Zeeland. The ODC is for experienced or professional and the ZC for entry-level photographers.

Adobe releases Lightroom 3.4 and Camera RAW 6.4
After making the release candidates available in March, Adobe has now released the complete versions of Lightroom 3.4 and Camera RAW 6.4. In both cases, these add additional RAW support for new camera models, including the Olympus EPL-2, XZ-1 and Canon EOS 600D (Rebel T3i). Both releases also fix bugs; such as the tendency to produce a magenta color cast with the Nikon D7000 when the in-camera multi-exposure mode was used. There are also a number of bug fixes to Lightrooms Publish services.

Canon releases firmware update for EOS 7D
Canon has announced the released of firmware update version 1.2.5 for the EOS 7D SLR. This has bug fixes including some issues with specific CF card compatibility and improving the read/write speeds with UDMA-7 cards.
The update is available as a free download for EOS 7D owners on the Canon site.
Pocket Guide: Dive Thailand 2011-12 released
Underwater photographer Paul Lees has released his latest edition of the Pocket Guide: Dive Thailand. The 2011-12 version starts with a general introduction to Thailand, a guide to traveling around and an overview of diving and snorkeling in and around Thailand, plus sections on learning to dive and health and safety for diving. The book then goes on to cover each different diving destinations, each with its own introduction and dive site map, plus descriptions of the most popular dive sites and a list of featured dive centers with the services and facilities offered.
The guide is available in print or also as a free download in pdf format. We plan to present a review of the book soon.
Final Cut Pro X may signpost the future for Aperture
In an article on MacCreate, David Schloss has outlined some personal ideas about the future for Apple’s image editing program, Aperture. He feels that as it seems as if the new Final Cut Pro X has a new design back-end (rather than the existing ProKit) that would lend itself to a photo editing package and the increased integration of IOS software features into the Mac OS.
Features that he hopes could be crossed over from Final Cut Pro X to a new version of Aperture would include automatic tagging and color correction
Nikon releases firmware update v1.2 for D7000
Nikon has announced the release of a firmware update for the D7000 SLR. Version 1.2 has fixed a few bugs including: Noise reduction processing at slower shutter speeds, video editing compatibility improved, a magenta caste that occurred in images that had their white balance corrected and errors in the virtual horizon display.
The update is available as a free update on the Nikon site.
RSMAS Miami photo contest results announced.
The University of Miami’s Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science has released the results of its 2011 underwater photography competition. Tobias Friedrich of Germany took the prize for best overall, with an image of two gobies taken at Marsa Alam, Egypt. Many congratulations to him, as well as all the other award winners. The competition is held each spring, and is open to amateur photographers only. The winning images will be displayed in an exhibit travelling throughout the South Florida community.

Rick Morris gives some personal thoughts about 3D by way of an introduction to a video interview with Evan Kovacs. Evan is director of photography for the Advanced Imaging and Visualization Lab at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) and his primary work is with new 3D video technology used in films and scientific research. In the interview, he talks about his dream job at WHOI and gives us his impressions on 3D and it’s place in the TV/Film world.
