Oceans in Focus competition announces winners
The third annual Ocean in Focus Conservation Photo Contest has announced it’s winning entries. The competition received more than 300 image submissions from more than 80 photographers around the world. The winner was Guy Marcovaldi with a shot of a free diver removing sea turtle by-catch from a discarded fishing net. The net was discovered drifting off the coast of Bahia, Brazil, days after a storm in which 17 sea turtles were entangled and killed.
British Wildlife Photography Awards announced
The results of the British Wildlife Photography Awards 2010 (BWPA) has been announced with the winner being an entry in the “Coast and Marine” class by Steve Young. The judges felt that his entry of a herring gull surrounded by crashing surf:
“Is a unique and striking image. One that captures perfectly the power, chaos and intensity of the ocean as it surrounds the majestic gull.”
Amongst the highly commended images are pictures from Alex Mustard and Charles Hood.
Nauticam NA-NEX5 demonstrated at Photokina
The recent photographic show, Photokina organized an Underwater Imaging World, with a testing and diving pool in the central area. Various underwater photographic equipment manufacturers were invited to present their products in a water tank on the back of a truck with a number of observation windows added to both sides. Despite limited space in the tank, Marc Hillesheim was able to demonstrate some underwater model shooting techniques, working with a model, Anne Aselmann.
Nauticam offered their NA-NEX5 housing with a Nikonos 15mm wide angle lens for the demonstration and Nauticam owner, Edward Lai, got in the water himself to shoot the images.
Imaging presentations at DEMA 2010
DEMA has released the full list of imaging seminars that will be presented during this years DEMA show, which runs from 17-20 November, in Las Vegas, Nevada. The topics covered range widely, and cover both video and still photography. The Image Resource Center will be located at Booth 3644.
Wetpixel will have full coverage of the whole DEMA show this year, with several correspondents present and reporting throughout. Please expect regular updates during the show, and a range of articles after.
Raja Ampat competition finishes soon
The Wetpixel Raja Ampat entry tag design competition 2010 is in its last stages, with only a few more days to vote for your favorite entries. The winning design will adorn all visitors BCD’s when they visit the popular diving destination in 2011, and the winner will receive a all-inclusive, minimum 10-day dive trip for two people to Raja Ampat.
Voting for the entries ends on 11 October, so please head on over and vote if you haven’t done so already.
Space now available on Wetpixel Raja Ampat expedition
Space has just freed up on the Wetpixel Raja Ampat expedition to the Misool Eco Resort from November 20 to December 2 due to a cancellation. There is one room available for either one or two people. Guests must arrive in Sorong, Indonesia on or before November 20th to meet the boat transfer to the resort.

Mary Lynn Price blogs from Antarctica
DiveFilm HD host and Wetpixel moderator, Mary Lynn Price, is on her way to Antarctica to video document some of the Weddell seal science work being done there during the 2010 Weddell seal pupping season. She plans to post a video blog of her trip and the science work with the seals from her remote field camp on the sea ice near Big Razorback Island. This small volcanic island is the south-eastern most of the Dellbridge Islands, lying in Erebus Bay off the west side of Ross Island, and to quote Wikipedia, the name is “descriptive”.
X-Ray magazine issue 38 available
X-Ray International magazine issue 38 is now available for download. This issue has articles by Scott Bennett about Utila Island, “Sulawesi muck diving & diversity” is by Eric Hanuaer and Don Silcock writes about North Sulawesi. In addition, it has a review of dive watches, Lawson Wood talks about photographic field work, Michel Braunstein about the Amazonian dolphins and the featured photographer is Caelum Mero.
