Sly Lee is the founder of The Hydrous, a nonprofit that 3-D scans coral reefs. The Hydrous uses Autodesk software that takes 200,000 or more of coral reefs and turns them into 3-D models. These 3-D models can be compared to those made years from now of the same reef to study changes.
“At first, we wanted to scan a subset of coral reefs. But that’s when I was thinking linearly. We’re going to be able scan all of the reefs, easily. In the next five years—that’s conservative, probably way faster than that.”
