Arctic under Pressure: Deep sea life video

Environmental organization Greenpeace has recently explored the ocean floor around Svalbard up in the high Arctic. The aim of the expedition was to highlight an ecosystem which has never been seen but is now threatened by encroaching fishing operations.

This video clip is part of a new documentary: The Polar Explorer. Filmed by Mark Terry, filmmaker of the award-winning The Antarctica Challenge: A Global Warning, it chronicles the Greenpeace scientific expedition crossing the Northwest Passage and shows new climate data from both the Arctic and Antarctica.

Under the Bridge: A new book by Suzan Meldonian

Blue Heron Bridge in Florida is a much-loved macro site for underwater photographers. Under the Bridge is a new 250 page book by Suzan Meldonian celebrating the diversity of life sometimes found at a single dive site.

The book is not only a fantastic record of the dive site, but also an indication of the treasures to be found by diving repeatedly at your local site. In fact, Alex Mustard was diving with Suzan at Blue Heron Bridge yesterday and despite having just written the book, she still had two first sightings of new creatures during the dive.

Alex Mustard is out in Palm Beach at the moment about to kick off the first Wetpixel sharks & dolphins expedition of the year! He’s started the customary trip journal topic in the the forums, where there are sure to be updates from the field as participating photographers (and Wetpixel members) take and post photos.

At the moment, Alex and gang are diving the renowned muck site at the Blue Heron Bridge. Tomorrow evening, they will head off to the Bahamas for sharks!

Bent Christensen posts review of Nauticam viewfinder

Bent Christensen has posted a guest review of the Nauticam viewfinder on the Nauticam USA blog. He outlines the procedure for attaching it to his Ikelite housing, and then compares its performance to that of the standard viewfinder.

“The Nauticam covers 100% of the picture, is far brighter, seems to be sharper, and it is possible to read the lcd-strip information at the bottom of the camera viewfinder.”

During his testing, and using it for super macro, he found that the viewfinder allowed him to see exactly where the focus point was.

Entries open for NCUPS beach and boat competition Photo

Entries open for NCUPS beach and boat competition

Entries have opened for the North California Underwater Photographic Society’s (NCUPS) annual beach and boat photo/video competition. The 24 hour event will be held over 6-8 August 2010 at Monterey Bay, California. All entries must be taken during the competition period, and in Monterey Bay.

Other events scheduled over the weekend include a cocktail party, dinner and technique seminars. There will be an awards ceremony for the winning photos and videos on 8 August.
