Fantasea Line has announced the FP-5000 underwater camera housing for the Nikon Coolpix P5000 digital camera. The housing has buttons that provide access all camera functions, a built-in diffuser, a depth rating of 200 feet, and also features a new, form-fitting design.

Shark Trust ‘Sharks In Focus’ 2007 Photo Competition

The Shark Trust, along with Diver Magazine, has opened the “Sharks In Focus” photo competition to submission of entries. Intended to “celebrate the beauty and highlight the vulnerability of sharks,” the grand prize winner will receive a week-long diving holiday for two in the Maldives. Sponsors include Barefoot Traveller, Suunto, Mares, Ocean Optics, and Fujifilm.

The August 31, 2007 deadline is fast approaching, and while there is no entry fee, there is a limit of two submissions per entrant, so choose wisely. The top photographs will be displayed at the Dive 2007 exhibit at NEC Birmingham in October and published in the 2008 Diver Magazine calendar.

Sea & Sea announces 10 megapixel DX-1G underwater camera

Sea & Sea has announced the DX-1G underwater housing and 10 megapixel 1G camera with built-in Vibration Correction, expected to be released in August. The camera features a 24-72mm fixed lens, 2.5” LCD display, and a shutter response time of only 0.1 seconds, with the option to take another photo in just one second.

The camera can record images in RAW format, has both aperture-priority and manual exposure modes, and records movies at 30fps. The companion housing is rated up to 50m depth and has two fiber-optic cable sockets. Continue reading for the press release from Sea & Sea…

Galápagos added to UNESCO’s list of World Heritage in Danger

On Tuesday, the World Heritage Committee added the Galápagos Islands to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) List of World Heritage in Danger.

Known as a “melting pot of marine species…and unusual animal life,” the area was the first to be placed on the World Heritage List in 1978. However, “the number of days spent by passengers of cruise ships has increased by 150 percent over the past 15 years,” and it is believed the traffic and introduced invasive species are beginning to threaten the natural ecosystem. The List of World Heritage in Danger seeks to mobilize support for the conservation of threatened areas.

DivePhotoGuide.com has announced the first DivePhotoGuide / Wakatobi Underwater Photo and Video Festival and Shootout, from March 28 - April 15, 2008 in Indonesia. The festival is split into two sessions; from March 28 - April 4, guests will stay on the Pelagian liveaboard, and from April 4 - April 15, at the Wakatobi Dive Resort.

Land activities range from photo, video, and editing workshops to nightly reviews. There will also be weekly contests in wide-angle, macro, and video categories for the chance to win up to $10,000 in prizes from sponsors including Amphibico, Sea & Sea, Mares, H2O Photo Pros, and Ultralight.

Today is the last official day of the Digital Shootout Bonaire 2007!  We had an evening awards ceremony presentation that included a topside slideshow and an underwater slideshow of all the images submitted in the photo contest, followed by a presentation of this year’s winning images.  After the show, more than 20 of us ended up at Papaya Moon, a relatively new Tex-Mex restaurant in town.
