Apple has provided some information regarding its plans to satisfy the demands of pro users. The company has been widely criticized for abandoning this sector of the market, with many pros porting their systems over to Windows. The 2013 Mac Pro has not seen any hardware upgrades since its release.

Today, Apple is shipping a Mac Pro with a 6-core Intel Xeon processor, dual AMD FirePro D500 GPUs and 16GB of memory for $2,999, and for $3,999, you will now get an 8-core processor and dual D700 GPUs.

In a frank interview on TechCrunch Apple’s design team admits that the Mac Pro’s design has limited their options to upgrade it. They plan to release a whole new Mac Pro that will address this issue, along with an external Pro display in 2018. In addition, there will be new iMac models with “unspecified spec bumps that will make them more attractive to those pro users” that will be released this year at some point.

In the interview, Apple Senior Vice President of Worldwide Marketing Phil Schiller states:

“The Mac has an important, long future at Apple, that Apple cares deeply about the Mac, we have every intention to keep going and investing in the Mac,” and “if we’ve had a pause in upgrades and updates on that, we’re sorry for that — what happened with the Mac Pro, and we’re going to come out with something great to replace it. And that’s our intention.”

Whether this, after 4 years of silence, will be enough to stem the flow of pro users away from Apple remains to be seen.
