California governor Brown signs legislation that bans Orca captivity
California governor Jerry Brown signed legislation tuesday that bans killer whales from breeding and captivity. Starting in June of next year marine parks, like SeaWorld, will be able to use currently captive orcas for educational purposes only. The law was authored by assemblyman Richard Bloom (D-Santa Monica).
The law cements an announcement made by SeaWorld in March of this year that they would end their Shamu performance shows as well as their killer whale breeding program. The announcement came after widespread popular disproval of killer whale captivity following the documentary Blackfish was released in 2013.
