Introduction.

The Bahamas Underwater Photo Week has been conceived as an event “to capture a week in the underwater life of the Bahamas”. Conceived by Alert Diver’s Stephen Frink, the idea has been adopted by the Bahamas Diving Association and the Bahamas Ministry of Tourism, who have provided venues and funding to make it all happen. The concept is quite simple, to get four underwater photographers in the Bahamas at different venues and get them to shoot at the same time, producing a photographic documentary of the underwater life of the Islands at that time. This is not intended to be an ecological survey, but rather showing the varied diving opportunities on the Islands in their best light.

The Bahamas is comprised of 700 islands sprinkled over 100,000 square miles of ocean starting just 50 miles off the coast of Florida. The archipelago is an ecological oasis featuring 2,000 breathtaking islands and cays and claims to have the clearest water on the planet. In addition, the islands have a long tradition of marine conservation which has promoted a strong and healthy shark population.

The photographers chosen for the event are Stephen Frink (Bimini, Cat Island, GBI and Abaco), Eric Cheng (New Providence and Harbour Island/Eleuthera), Berkley White (Andros and Exumas) and Alex Mustard (Long Island, Conception and San Salvador). In many instances, the photographers will not meet each other during the week!

Like most relatively simple ideas, this one soon snowballed. Emmy Award winning filmmaker Christian Dimitrius was drafted in to produce a film of the event. Lastly Abi Mullens and I were added in order to post news about the event on Wetpixel. Throughout the week, we will be adding photos and reports about the goings on here in the Bahamas, to try and give people a flavor of what things are like here. I am “shadowing” Alex Mustard around Long Island, Conception and San Salvador and Abi will be doing the same with Stephen Frink.
