First review of the GoPro HERO HD 3D system

Over on Noodletron, Eric Cheng has published an early review of the GoPro HERO HD 3D system, complete with 3D footage captured by it. The expansion kit was only released last Monday, so this is likely to be the first user review available. He has not managed to use it underwater yet, but has found time to experiment with the camera attached to a remote control car.

Initial impressions are favourable, with the GoPro Cineform 3D editing software that is bundled with the expansion kit pretty slick too. Eric finds:

“The video quality isn’t bad for a $99 housing that accepts two cameras I already have. I can’t wait to stick one in a shark’s mouth!”

GoPro's own promotional video featuring the UW sequence is misleading if you could not duplicate that footage with the kit as it comes out of the box. As a prospective customer I find this disturbing.

Posted by Steve Douglas on 2011-04-11 14:51:01 Updated the original article with an underwater-specific note: One quick note for those of you planning on taking the 3D HERO underwater: the standard GoPro housing is waterproof to 180 feet, but it won’t focus underwater. All compelling underwater clips, even on GoPro’s own site, are shot with modified GoPro housings with flat ports. You’ll need to use third-party modifications to focus underwater, or wait until GoPro releases a flat port accessory. GoPro’s 3D highlight reel (below) includes footage of a woman in a bikini swimming underwater. She is carrying a GoPro, and you can clearly see that a flat port is mounted.
