Humpback whales are gathering in unusually large numbers
Scientists have been observing large gatherings of humpback whales feeding together off the coast of South Africa in recent years. The size of these gatherings numbers from 20 to 200 individuals, behavior that was only known to occur recently. A recently published study in the journal PlosOne examines the hypotheses of these “super-groups”.
Scientists suggest changes in food supplies or even that the numbers of humpback whales are on the rise, slowly recovering after generations of being hunted by humans.
