In the wild: Digital cinema housings
During a recent visit to Singapore, Scubacam proprietor and Wetpixel member David Cheung (CheungyDiver) showed me two of the new “big guns” he had recently acquired. David runs a housing rental program for professional filmmakers in Asia.
He showed me the new Gates housing for the Phantom Flex 4K high speed camera, complete with the new TVL 55 housing for the TV Logic VFM-058W field monitor. The camera offers 4K recording at an amazing 960fps, ideal for filming fast action like feeding sequences.
The housing features Gates’s mechanical controls and oversized smooth turning dials for follow focus etc.
The housing is beautifully machined:

He also showed me his innovative housing for the Arri Alexa digital cinema camera. David took an existing Patima housing and re-engineered it in order to center the lens position and hence use it with a Gates dome port.
He also has modified the controls to allow the use of the Arri remote control to access all the camera’s functions.
In addition, David has added manual controls to the housing.
