In a new study published this week, researchers have shown how shallow water, low oxygen dead zones occur at night in the creeks and rivers of the Chesapeake Bay, affecting the survival of oysters in the bay.

Maryland and Virginia have poured tens of millions of dollars into the oyster restoration of the bay, only to be met with minimal success. This study sheds some light on what’s happening with oysters at night that compromises their immune system and makes them vulnerable to a diseases known as dermo.
