Nikon D800 timelapse from Alex Mustard

Wetpixel Associate Editor Alex Mustard has already had the opportunity to shoot (on land) with the new Nikon D800 SLR. One of the features of the new camera is in-camera processing of time-lapse projects. Alex’s HD video below is straight out of the camera. The camera he was using was a pre-production model; production cameras’ output may vary from it somewhat and please bear in mind that Vimeo applies compression to any video uploaded to it.

The images and footage were shot during Alex’s underwater photography workshop in the Cayman Islands in January 2012.

HI Neomd, May I suggest that you post your question onto the main Wetpixel forum? It is here Given that a key to good underwater photography is getting very close to your subject, it is hard to imagine a situation where such a big focal length would be useful!
Posted by adamhanlon on 2012-03-11 16:14:09 Alex: Your comments regarding the degree of difficulty in using this camera UW with the FX lenses and any greater problem avoiding motion effects at the speeds and f stops that we usually apply underwater? I have been using the D200 for 5 years and at least to my standards obtaining fairly good pictures though not of the quality you achieve . Also could one use the Nikon 28-300 VR changing only the housing ports depending on what one planned to shoot on a particular dive, e.g. macro or not and achieve good results . Thanks for any feedback you can provide
Posted by neomd on 2012-03-11 14:00:46 Very cool functionality. Quick question, Alex - are you able to keep all of the original frames in addition to the rendered video? This would be pretty critical for being able to correct flicker in post, yet it's great to have the finished movie to preview right away. I haven't read up too much on the Nikon timelapse implementation.
