A new paper, published in the Proceedings of the Royal Society journal shows that Hydrophis (Pelamis) platuru sea snakes drink from rain that collects on the surface of the sea. The paucity of this means that the animals often go for extended periods without drinking, with recorded intervals of up to seven months. During this dehydrated phase, the snakes can lose up to 18% of their body mess, the report claims.
