Housing importation duties levied at Baja airports

Wetpixel member divrndeep has reported on the forum that Mexican customs officials at Cabo San Lucas (SJD) and La Paz (LAP) airports are enforcing a policy of charging an importation fee on underwater camera housings. She reports that the fee is based on 16% of the housing’s worth and that customs officials will use Google to ascertain a housing’s value. At the time of writing, there are no reports of this being implemented at other points of entry.

Hundreds of endangered olive ridley sea turtles found dead from fishing net off Mexico

Mexico’s federal agency for environmental protection announced Tuesday of this week that it found over 300 dead olive ridley sea turtles. The turtles died from apparent entanglement with a ghost fishing net off the state of Oaxaca, Mexico. The news comes just a week after news of another large mortality event of mostly olive ridley sea turtles off Mexico. Although these events should cause some concern, scientists believe it is just a small percentage of the tens of thousands of olive ridley turtles nesting off southern Mexico every year.

State Department issues travel warning for Yucatan

The U. S. Embassy in Mexico City, Mexico has issued a warning about using passenger ferries from Playa del Carmen to Cozumel, Qintana Roo, Mexico. On 21 February, a bomb was detonated on a Barcos Caribe ferry whilst passengers were disembarking, causing 26 injuries. On 1 March, another vessel from the same fleet was found to have explosive devices which were made safe. (Stock Image. Ultramar ferries were not affected by the recent attack)

Mexico announces biosphere reserve

Just ahead of the UN Biodiversity Conference in Cancun, Mexico has announced a new biosphere reserve encompassing much of the Quintana Roo coastline. Mexico News Today reports that the new protected area will encompass 5.7 million hectares (22,000 sq. miles), and will include the municipalities of Isla Mujeres, Benito Juárez, Puerto Morelos, Solidaridad, Cozumel, Tulum, Bacalar and Othón P. Blanco
