Gabon announces Africa’s largest network of marine protected areas

On Monday of this week the central African country of Gabon announced a network of 20 marine parks and protected reserves. More than a quarter of Gabon’s coast will be protected, stretching for a collective total of 20,500 square miles. Although not much of Gabon’s waters have been explored, what is known is that it is home to the world’s largest breeding populations of Leatherback and Olive Ridley sea turtles.

Gabon announces newest marine reserve of 18,000 square miles

On wednesday the president of Gabon, Ali Bongo Ondimba, announced at the opening of the 2014 IUCN World Parks Congress that 18,000 square miles of ocean, nearly a quarter of its waters, will be protected from commercial fishing. More than 20 species of sharks and rays inhabit Gabon’s coastline as well as 20 species of marine mammals, and four species of sea turtles, which includes the world’s largest breeding leatherback turtle population and the Atlantic Ocean’s largest breeding olive ridley turtle population.
