Filmmaker Cristian Dimitrius has shared some rushes of amazing footage of orcas (Orcinus orca) hunting Atlantic herring (Clupea harengus) baitballs. It was filmed recently off Tromsø, Norway.
Jacques de Vos has posted this stunning image of orcas (Orcinus orca) onto the Wetpixel Facebook group. It was shot during one of his Arctic Freediving Expeditions in early November 2016 a few hours from Tromsø, Norway while freediving.
Earth Touch news has featured video from the Monterey Bay Whale Watch that features what is thought to be the first footage of its kind of transient orcas feeding on the carcass of a gray whale. The whale watching boat first spotted the orcas on April 20th and then sent the drone up to get a better perspective of the rare feeding behavior. “Over 35 hours and [they were] still feeding as we left!” the team stated.
When Jack Preston took his drone out for only the second time, he did not expect to find Orcas hunting in the crystal clear shallows around the Mercury Islands in New Zealand. The Orcas of this area hunt stingrays in the shallows collectively, one whale pulling a stingray out from a hiding spot and another fully biting it.
In a recent study published in Marine Mammal Science, scientists analyzed the somewhat puzzling behavior of humpback whales to protect other species from killer whales. The study focused on 115 specific instances where humpbacks interfered in orcas attacking other animals. Without any obvious benefit to the humpbacks resulting from protecting other animals, the scientists said they could not rule out altruistic intentions on the part of the humpback whales.
SeaWorld CEO, Joel Manby has announced today that the company will end its controversial orca breeding program. Given that SeaWorld does not catch wild orcas for use in its shows, this means that when the current animals in their tanks die they will not be replaced and the shows will cease. Underwater photographer Tony Wu recently traveled to Norway to spend time in the water photographing killer whales. Here he discusses his experiences with the whales and his chosen life path. The video was shot by Norway’s Dagens Naeringsliv TV.
The Smithsonian Channel has featured filmmaker Dave Rigg’s stunning footage of orcas (Orcinus orca) apparently playing around his boat. Captured using a innovative tow camera at the Bremer Canyon, a deepwater ecosystem in which offshore orcas can be reliably encountered throughout the Australian summer months.
NOAA has teamed up with the Vancouver Aquarium to capture aerial images of a group of Northern Resident orcas in British Columbia with a UAV. This population is threatened and feeds on salmon in the area, which is in itself threatened. (Photo credit: NOAA, Vancouver Aquarium.)
