The 2022 United Nations World Oceans Day is today, 8 June! While everyday should be a day for the oceans, the UN has a series of live events scheduled, around the theme of “Revitalization: Collective Action for the Ocean” that aim to focus attention on the plight of the oceans and illustrate how governments, businesses, organizations and individuals can play a part in protecting the oceans.These commence at 10AM EDT, and include the announcement of the results of the 2022 World Oceans Day Imaging contest at 11.30 PDT.

Come and join the United Nations on 8 June for a full day of online discussion, imagery, and motivation aiming to “raise global awareness of the benefits humankind derives from the ocean and our individual and collective duty to use its resources sustainably.” AT 12:40 pm, Ellen Cuylaerts will announce the results of the 2020 UN World Oceans Day Photo Competition, and the event will culminate with a live celebration of the oceans by musicians from around the world.

National Geographic has published 17 of underwater photographer David Doubilet’s most “jaw-dropping” images as well as an interview in honor of World Oceans Day. Doubilet, widely considered one of the most influential underwater photographers of all time, had his first image published in National Geographic magazine in 1972. It is fitting to choose the images of such a well respected photographer as a window into the ocean on this day.
