Vancouver aquarium to cease marine mammal captivity program
The Vancouver aquarium will no longer keep whales or dolphins in captivity. The decision came as a result of the Vancouver Park Board voted last year to prevent the aquarium from acquiring any new marine mammals for exhibits. The aquarium has stated that the intense public debate is hindering is conservation work.
Here is the statement released from the Vancouver Park Board: “The public told us they believed the continuing importation and display of these intelligent and sociable mammals was unethical and incompatible with evolving public opinion and we amended our bylaws accordingly. We look forward to working with the Vancouver Aquarium as it intensifies its focus on Ocean Wise research and conservation”
