Video: Swarm of red pelagic tuna crabs carpet the seafloor
During a recent deep sea expedition off the coast of Panama by Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, chief scientist Jesus Pineda witnessed an incredible gathering of crabs. While exploring the Hannibal Bank Seamount the scientists came across thousands of red pelagic tuna crabs swarming across the seafloor.
At 1,200 feet deep while exploring other life on the seamount, the scientists witnessed a disturbance in the bottom silt and decided to investigate. What they came across was thousands of inch-long crabs.
Pineda had this to say about the experience: “I was mesmerized. I just couldn’t believe it. It was very unexpected.”
