Video: Threshers by Howard and Michelle Hall

Howard and Michelle Hall have posted this silky smooth montage of pelagic thresher sharks (Alopias pelagicus) filmed at Malapascua Island, Philippines. The footage was shot in 8K resolution with a RED 8K Digital Cinema camera.

The threshers come in at all times of the day. I have videoed them at 10 a.m. and shot stills at 2:30 pm. My GoPro 2.7k footage looks similar to this. The camera compensates fairly well given the light levels at 30m for nice blues.

If one would follow your argument, all BBC and National Geographic underwater footage should be scrapped as it looks too good to be real. „Blue Planet 2“ - All „Fake News“ as nobody would ever see this as is shown by the BBC.

I hope you get the point: Your comment is utter nonsense. It takes years of experience to capture underwater live as good as Howard is doing here. We should be grateful to people like him for capturing such beauty in such quality.

Usually in ambient light what your eyes see is different than what the camera sees once correctly white balanced.

This is some beautiful footage. I've been there and did not see the sharks as clearly or as beautifully framed as shown in this short video. So thanks a lot to Howard and Michelle for capturing it. Seriously.

However, I don't think the production values do the experience justice. I'd go as far as to say they are objectively false. At least at Malapascua, threshers are seen at ~30 at daybreak. Simply put, the water is not even close to that color, it is closer to monochrome, and the sequence beginning aa 1:20 is in my opinion an egregious abuse. I've not seen that color of water at any depth in 30 years of diving on three continents.

I love their work. Please, though, produce videos that look like nature!
