World’s second largest shark sanctuary formed in Kiribati

On November 18th, the nation of Kiribati announced the establishment of a shark sanctuary that bans all commercial shark fishing in the country’s national waters. The sanctuary is 3.4 million square miles, the second largest sanctuary in the entire world. The Pacific Ocean sanctuary covers an area larger than the country of India.

This is what Tetabo Nakara, Kiribati’s minister of fisheries and marine resources development had to say about the new shark sanctuary: “The establishment of the shark sanctuary will bring our ministries and relevant stakeholders together to protect sharks from threats such as illegal fishing, and will allow us to enforce regulations to ensure the survival of sharks in our exclusive economic zone
