Abi Smigel Mullens: Underwater kids
Abi Smigel Mullens is a photographer who knows a thing or two about underwater photography. It’s merely that her chosen subject may just be one of the most unpredictable ones around, namely kids.
Children’s underwater portraits was a pet project before Abi even settled on photography as a career path. As a swim coach she snapped underwater photos of her swimmers for end-of-year presents while simultaneously pursuing degrees in marine science and photography. At the conclusion of college her right brain won out and she set her sights on underwater photography as a vocation.
Abi’s wildlife underwater photography has been published in dive magazines throughout the world and she was recently profiled in Professional Photographer magazine. She is also a PADI instructor and teaches underwater photography. Of late she has been focusing more and more on kids and, several years ago, formed her children’s underwater portrait business, Sea Star.
Currently Abi has acquired two new titles: Associate Editor of Wetpixel and Mom. She is excited for the coming adventures that both will bring, including the prospect of a continual (and hopefully willing) underwater subject.
