RIP Dean Burman
It is with tremendous sadness that I share the news that Wetpixel member and contributor Dean Burman (DeanB) suddenly passed away over the New Year’s holiday. Dean was a filmmaker, with numerous film credits including a film featuring some amazing behavior footage of pike in an award-winning short film called “Lair of the Water Wolf.” He is survived by his daughter and parents, and our hearts go out to them along with his many other friends at what must be a devastating time
The Sharks of Protea Banks by Don Silcock
Don Silcock describes the incredible shark encounters that occur at Protea Banks, off the East coast of South Africa. The bank is washed by the fertile Agulhas current, bringing nutrients and food that allows a significant population of apex predators. Don describes diving with blacktip, ragged tooth, Zambezi, tiger and hammerhead sharks and shares the beautiful images of his experiences.
Final Call for entries: UPY 2019
It is the last couple of days to enter the 2019 Underwater Photographer of the Year competition. The contest features 10 international and 4 British geographical categories and this year’s deadline for entries is 4 January.
Issue 106 of Underwater Photography magazine is available
Issue 106 of Underwater Photography (UwP) magazine is now available to download. Along with lots of news about new products, it has reviews of the OrcaTorch D900V, Canon EOS R in the Ikelite 200DL housing and Nauticam WACP tech notes & observations. In terms of techniques, Mike Bartick describes how to capture the “Blackwater bounty.”
Issue 12 of HEINZ Magazine available
Issue 12 of HEINZ magazine is now available to view and download. It features articles about Scotland’s basking sharks, the Aldabra Atoll in the Seychelles, shark photography and the Sea of Cortez, along with images by Athuro J. Telle, Hannes Klostermann and Roland Bach.

The Big 4 by Mike Bartick
Award-winning photographer Mike Bartick has written an extensive article about octopuses for Wetpixel, illustrated with his stunning images. He refers to the wunderpuss (Wunderpus photogenicus), the mimic octopus (Thaumoctopus mimicus), coconut octopus (Amphioctopus marginatus) and of course, the blue ringed octopus (Hapalochlaena sp.) as being the “Big 4” of octopus species and describes both their natural history and techniques for capturing images of them.
Inon ships ND filters for S-2000 strobes
Inon has announced the release of an ND diffuser for the S-2000 strobe. It provides minus 4 stops that allow the strobes to be used even when the camera’s aperture is wide open. Inon has designed the diffuser to ensure that it retains natural color.
