Florida is set to impose restrictions on shore based shark fishing
Florida state wildlife commission voted Wednesday to impose restrictions on shore based shark fishing. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, which met in Fort Lauderdale, voted unanimously to create much stricter rules for shore based shark fishing. The exact rules will be drawn up at a later date, but may include licenses for shore based shark fishing as well as restrictions on gear that may be used for fishing.
Images show a perfectly preserved shipwreck nearly 300 feet below Lake Superior
Images published this week on Yahoo show a perfectly preserved shipwreck, the Gunilda, that has been resting 270 feet below the surface of Lake Superior for 107 years. The images were captured by Becky Kagan Schott, underwater photographer and technical diving instructor, over the course of 25 dives to the extreme depth. The preservation of the ship and expert lighting make for a stunning combination.
X-Ray Mag issue 85 available
X-Ray Magazine issue 85 is now available to download. The issue contains articles about the Solomon Islands, the beaked whales of El Hierro, rebreathers for photographers, St Helena, nurse sharks and shooting macro in Anilao.
Retra ceases production of their Flash
Retra has announced that they are ceasing production of their Flash. The company cites problems with production times causing availability issues and so have decided to concentrate on refining their production process before releasing a new product in July or August 2018. All and any servicing requirements along with existing warranties will continue to honored.
Adobe explains how to use and create Profiles in Lightroom
April’s release of Lightroom and Camera Raw included a significantly updated Profiles feature. Adobe has released a blog post that explains in some depth how these work. Among the information is a paper written by Thomas Knoll and his ACR teammates Eric Chan and Max Wendt explaining the nuances between the new Adobe Raw profiles and a video tutorial on how to create custom versions.
Retra announces support for LSD with Inon Z330 strobe
Retra has produced a mounting kit to allow their LSD to be used with the new Inon Z330 strobe. It is available either as a complete unit or as a user installed upgrade kit/mounting band for LSD owners that are currently using the Z-240/D2000.
Potential new species of manta ray spotted off Palm Beach Florida
Drone footage shot off Palm Beach, Florida by photographer Ivy Yin of Our Children’s Earth Foundation shows footage of a potentially new species of manta ray. Yin sent the footage to Dr. Andrea Marshall, co-founder of the Marine Megafauna Foundation, and a scientist who studies manta rays off the Florida coast. Not only does she believe this to be a new species of manta ray, but also that the coast of Florida around Palm Beach could serve as a nursery for this species.
Help Protect Florida Giant Groupers by Walt Stearns
The Florida Wildlife Commission (FWC) is hosting a public meeting on Thursday 26 April in Fort Lauderdale to discuss a proposal to open the breeding grounds of the critically endangered goliath grouper (Epinephelus itajara) to fishing.
