New marine sanctuary established in Galapagos Islands

The government of Ecuador announced yesterday plans to establish a marine sanctuary around the islands of Wolf and Darwin in the Galapagos Islands. Although the waters surrounding the famous islands have been protected since 1998 under the Galapagos Marine Reserve, small scale fishing was still permitted throughout most of the waters. This new sanctuary will establish strict no-take zones.

Veteran camera equipment manufacturers Polaroid has launched a range of polycarbonate housings for compact, mirrorless and SLR cameras. Variously reated to between 130 and 160 feet (40 to 50m), the housings have a fixed port, so work with specific lens combinations. The company will offer housings for cameras from Canon, Nikon, Olympus, Panasonic and Sony.

The Japanese museum, Okhotsk Sea Museum, that put on a photo contest and chose a man standing on a dead whale as its winning image has issued an apology. The apology comes after the public reacted with strong negativity to the museum’s choice. In addition to an apology, the prize has been revoked and this year’s contest is cancelled.
