Paper shows cooperation between rabbitfishes

Nature has published a paper that illuminates the complex nature of relationships among fishes. A study carried out around Lizard Island, Greta Barrier Reef, Australia has shown that rabbitfishes (Siganus corallinus, S. doliatus, S. puellus, and S. vulpinus) operate as pairs, with one partner maintaining a look-out while the other feeds. behavior suggests that the fish have powers of cognition, reciprocity and cooperation that were previously not associated with fishes in general. A new paper “Fish tales: Combating fake science in popular media” published in the journal Ocean and Coastal Management explores how scientists can correct the spread of misinformation and bad science that is sometimes propagated by the media. The use of social media tools by scientists during 2013/14 pointing out the poor science and factual errors in some of the programs of the 2013 Discovery Shark Week, actually helped caused a reduction in viewer numbers of the event in 2014.

Orcalight has announced the availability of their Expedition series video lights. These feature carbon fiber construction and a redesigned battery pack. The new Expedition model 2260 series offer 22,000 lumen output with a burn time of 1.25 hours at full power, but are neutrally buoyant in the water. The battery pack also features UN38.3 flight certification and is designed to allow airline staff to easily verify that it is suitable for travel.

Gates Underwater Products has announced an upgrade path for owners of DEEP EPIC and DEEP DRAGON housings. Once upgraded, they will be compatible with all EPIC models, including both WEAPON and RAVEN. Both Gates’s RED external monitor housing are supported and it has been confirmed that WEAPON will allow tethered REDMOTE support, allowing for full menu access via the remote in the housing.
