Sony announces the α7S II camera
Sony has announced the α7S II full frame mirrorless camera. Its 35mm 12.2 megapixel image sensor and an upgraded BIONZ X image processing engine offer a native ISO range of 100 – 102400. It can record video in full 4K at 100Mbps and utilizes information from all te pixels, as well as 1080 at 120fps. In S-Log 3 gamut it offers 14 stops of dynamic range.
Shark sanctuaries announced around Dutch Caribbean islands
Over 8,500 square miles of shark sanctuaries have been declared surrounding the Dutch Caribbean islands of Bonaire and Saba. The announcement was made on September 2nd by Dutch State Secretary for Economic Affairs, Sharon Dijksma. National Geographic Magazine bought by 21st Century Fox
In a deal worth over $725 million, the National Geographic Society has sold a majority shareholding to media mogul, Rupert Murdoch’s 21st Century Fox. This now means that National Geographic magazine will now combine with the Fox-owned National Geographic TV channels. The rationale for doing so is in order to to increase the amount of money available for investment into its science, research and education programs. The magazine has been a non-profit organization for 127 years.
Anilao: Biodiversity and dive guide launched at DRT Show
Carlos Trabal has announced that his new book “Anilao Biodiversity and Dive Guide” will be launched at the DRT Show. This book shows the great biodiversity in Anilao waters with more than 350 pictures from contributing international underwater photographers with the aim of helping snorkelers and scuba divers to have a quick reference of the most common marine species that one can encounter while diving and taking underwater stills and video footage around Anilao.

Video: Ragged tooth sharks of Aliwal Shoal
The ragged tooth (Carcharias taurus) aka sand tiger sharks are frequently encountered inhabitants on the reefs of Aliwal Shoal, Kwazulu Natal, South Africa. Earth Touch’s Wild Oceans pays the area a visit in this week’s episode, and the cameraman finds that despite appearances, the sharks are docile and happy to share the water with him.
Canon develops 250 megapixel sensor
Canon has announced that it has developed a CMOS sensor with approximately 250 megapixels. This has been achieved by advanced circuit miniaturization and signal processing technology allowing the digital information to be moved from the sensor quickly. In fact, it will shoot video at 5fps. Canon see the sensors application in industry and security applications, although the press release also mentions “the field of visual expression.”
