Kurt Amsler has posted an amazing sequence recording the actual birth of a sperm whale (Physeter macrocephalus) on Facebook. He describes it as being the “greatest experience I ever had, in 45 years of underwater photography”.
Enormous red tide off Northwest Florida
An enormous, and potentially devastating, red tide is now forming off the coast of Pensacola, Florida. The area where the algae is blooming is approximately 60 miles by 100 miles.
Results: Eilat Red Sea and World Shoot Out 2014
The Eilat Red Sea and World Shoot Outs concluded last Sunday 13 September with an award ceremony held in Eilat. 67 participants from 9 countries competed for prizes in nine categories during the actual shoot out, whilst the World Shoot Out attracted online entries from all over the world. The shoot out also hosted an attempt for the world’s largest live-streamed underwater event.
Appeal: Water filters for Hurricane Odile survivors
Hurricane Odile has cut a swath through Baja, causing large amounts of flooding and disrupting travel and infrastructure. Wetpixel’s friends, Solmar V are responding by providing portable water filters to those left without safe drinking water. They are seeking donations to help sustain this, please visit their Waves for Water fundraising page to assist their efforts.
Filmmaker Martin Dohrn creates special camera to film bioluminescence

Call for Entries: Underwater Photographer of the Year London 2015
The Underwater Photographer of the Year, London 2015 (UPY London), is calling for entries. It features categories for UK and international entries and for images shot in UK or international waters. The the Underwater Photographer of the Year and other winners will be announced on 14 February 2015 at an award ceremony on stage at the London International Dive Show. The deadline for entries is 5 January 2015.
Subal, Nexus and Seacam announce D810 housings
Seacam Nexus and Subal have announced their intention to support the Nikon D810 SLR camera and have images of their new housings. Seacam’s version is shipping now and is priced the same as their D800 version , with Subal’s housing scheduled to follow sometime in October and Nexus’s available for pre-order. Full details of the housings as well as Nexus and Subal’s prices are not yet available, although as soon as we have them, we will post them.
Panasonic announces the LX100 4K compact camera
Amongst the inevitable slew of pre-Photokina announcements, Panasonic has announced the LX100 compact camera. Featuring a 12.8 megapixel Micro 4/3 sensors and a 24-75mm f1.7-2.8 lens, the camera is capable of capturing 4K video at 30/25fps in MP4 format. It also offer an option of a “4K Photo mode”, which allows the user to capture stills from the 4K footage and has focus peaking available.
