Canon unveils the G7 X large sensor compact

Canon has unveiled the PowerShot G7 X camera which features a 1” 20.2-megapixel* High-Sensitivity CMOS sensor. This gives it an ISO range of 125 - 12,800 and as it is also equipped with the DIGIC 6 processing engine, shooting speeds of up to 6.5 fps. The lens is a 24-100mm equivalent with a built in ND filter. Controls include a programmable front control ring an EV dial, and tow customizable buttons.

Canon announces the EOS 7D Mark II

Canon has announced their long awaited successor to the 7D SLR camera. The EOS 7D Mark II features a new 20.2 megapixel APS-C Canon CMOS sensor and Dual DIGIC 6 Image Processors, giving an ISO range of 100-16000 and a burst rate of up to 10fps. AF is 65 point all Cross Type with -3 EV and the company’s Dual Pixel CMOS AF system, combined with the iTR (Intelligent Tracking and Recognition) scene recognition system.

Nikon announces the D750 SLR camera

Nikon has announced the release of the D750 full frame SLR camera. It features a new 24.3 megapixel FX-format CMOS sensor and the EXPEED 4 image-processing engine. Of particular interest is the claim that “the D750 even surpasses the D810 in image quality at high sensitivities, and the large pixel pitch delivers advantages in definition, depth, tonal gradation and clear color.” The camera will shoot at 6.5 fps, and the AF system works down to -3 EV.

Wetpixel would like to apologize to the community for the extended outage that we have been experiencing here on the site. Our hosting company has had some serious server issues, and despite our nagging, cajoling and even at one point (I am ashamed to say) threatening, they seemed very slow to manage to fix them. Western Australian shark cull halted

The BBC reports that the shark cull that was being carried out in Western Australia has been vetoed by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The Western Australian state government had instituted seven drum line baited traps in an effort, it said, to prevent shark attacks on the state’s beaches. This caused a worldwide protest, and the policy has now been overturned by the EPA, citing the fact that there was “a high degree of scientific uncertainty” about its efficacy. Nikon has released a super fast 20mm prime wide-angle lens for FX cameras. The lens’s maximum aperture of f1.8 and minimum focus distance of 20cm make make this interesting for underwater use. Until tested, it remains to be seen how it will perform behind a dome port however.

CITES shark and manta protection comes into force

As agreed at the Bangkok Conference in March 2013, international trade in products from 5 species of shark and all species of manta ray will need to be accompanied by documents showing that they were sustainably and legally harvested from 14 September. CITES and the Food and Agriculture Organization on the UK (FAO) have been provided with funding by the EU and other bodies to implement and enforce the new regulations.
