Divemaster game for the iPad to be released soon

Wetpixel member Gyula Somogyi (Jules (Helioxfilm)) has announced the imminent release of his Divemaster game for the iPad. The game focuses on the core activities of a working divemaster: Guiding divers under the water and showing them the amazing underwater world and animals. The player must connect the divers to those animals they wish to photograph and each photo taken rewards the player with tips from the divers. These tips can then be used to upgrade equipment and training.

The game will be available for any iPad from the fall of 2011.

AB376 passes California Senate: Shark fin trade illegal Photo

AB376 passes California Senate: Shark fin trade illegal

Bill AB376 has passed the California Senate and has gone to the governor to be signed into law. The bill will “make it unlawful for any person to possess, sell, offer for sale, trade, or distribute a shark fin” in the state of California, was passed by a majority of 25 for versus 9 against.

Shark Savers reports that polls indicated 70% of the Asian American community and 76% of California voters supported the shark fin ban. Despite this, AB 376 became an emotional battleground as shark fin lobbyists defended their interests and some members of the Asian community felt a shark fin ban unfairly impacted them. The positive result is a great one for shark conservation worldwide and, one hopes, may lead to other major economies banning the trade.

Trip report: Wetpixel Farne Islands Seal trip

Wetpixel member Tim Moran (Timmoranuk) writes about the recent Wetpixel Fane Islands Seal Trip (images by Cesare Naldi)

“We changed sites for the second dive of the day and found a very shallow bay with dozens of seals in the water and hauled out basking on the rocks. Again, I found them “spooky” and finished my dive early. A highlight of this dive for a couple of Wetpixelers was to find a pair mating in the shallows which, so preoccupied, allowed for a close approach.”

Late availability for Wetpixel Ultimate Indonesia expedition Photo

Late availability for Wetpixel Ultimate Indonesia expedition

We have an amazing opportunity for one person to join the Wetpixel Ultimate Indonesia expedition this year. This trip was heavily oversubscribed when the trip was announced and this last space has become available at late notice. It is aboard the live-aboard dive vessel MSY Damai II for 26 days and aims to dive Flores, Alor, and Komodo. Damai II is a luxury dive vessel with room for only 8-10 divers and is a comfortable, luxurious boat with a low guest count ensuring that the diving isn’t crowded. The trip departs Maumere on 26 October and returns to Labuanbajo on 20 November.

If you are interested, please contact Dan Baldocchi for more details.

RED releases Canon lens mount adaptor Photo

RED releases Canon lens mount adaptor

RED has announced the imminent release of an adaptor that allows users to shoot with Canon lenses with the RED EPIC, in place of the standard PL mount. Manufactured from titanium, and with a lock ring to ensure that long lenses are held securely, the lens adaptor is “smart” in that it can control camera iris, image stabilization, and autofocus electronically, via the various standard control options with EPIC (e.g. touch screen, side handle, REDMOTE). Vincent Laforet has published some footage using the camera with Canon long lenses and a prototype adaptor on his blog.

There is a full list of supported lenses in a thread on the REDUSER forum and the adaptor will start shipping on 9 September at a price of $2,000.

Award-winning photographer admits to faking images

PetaPixel has published a story stating that Terje Helleso, a nature photographer named as the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency Nature Photographer of the Year in 2010 was recently discovered to have published multiple images in which stock photographs of animals were added into nature scenes using software.

The manipulations came to light when conservationist Gunnar Gloerson noticed that one of Helleso’s photographs of a lynx showed the cat with winter fur, even though the photo was supposedly taken around July. He was also suspicious of Helleso’s claim over the numbers of lynx that he had seen.
