Dr Sylvia Earle’s biography and call to action, Mission Blue, has now been released on Netflix. The film traces Sylvia’s life of wonder and exploration, and her dedication to awakening the world to the need to give the ocean time and space to recover. The purpose of the film is to encourage people to act on the looming crisis that will, eventually destroy the oceans and hence radically affect life on earth.

Dr Earle says: “I wish that you would use all means at your disposal—films, expeditions, the web, new submarines—and campaign to ignite public support for a global network of marine protected areas—hope spots large enough to save and restore the ocean, the blue heart of the planet. How much? Some say 10 percent, some say 30 percent. You decide: how much of your heart do you want to protect?”
