Dr. Sylvia Earle has launched the HATCH Ocean Film Challenge. Hosted by Audience Awards, it is seeking entries from filmmakers showcasing “the impact humans have on the Ocean and the actions individuals can take to save the human race from extinction.” The top ranked films will premiere as a headline event at the DC Environmental Film Festival in March 2018, and then at the International Wildlife Film Festival in Missoula, April 2018 and AudFest in Los Angeles on June 8, 2018.

Dr. Sylvia Earle has been interviewed and featured in TIME magazine’s latest book FIRSTS Women Who are Changing the World. Earle is featured as the “Oceanographer” for her first of being the first woman to become chief scientist of the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Dr Sylvia Earle’s biography and call to action, Mission Blue, has now been released on Netflix. The film traces Sylvia’s life of wonder and exploration, and her dedication to awakening the world to the need to give the ocean time and space to recover. The purpose of the film is to encourage people to act on the looming crisis that will, eventually, destroy the oceans and hence radically affect life on earth.
