Ocean Art 2018 is calling for entries
The 2018 Ocean Art Photo competition is calling for entries. Featuring 16 categories, it offers a prize purse of trips and equipment worth over of $75,000. Category winners will be able to rank their preferred prizes. The deadline for entries is 30 November.
The Getty Family acquires Getty Images once again
The stock photo agency Getty Images is now owned, once again, by the Getty family. The stock photo agency was started in 1997 by Mark Getty and CEO Jonathan Klein. The agency was acquired in 2008 by private equity firm Hellman & Friedman. Then the company again traded hands in 2012 and was purchased by the Carlyle Group. Going full circle, the Getty family has purchased a majority stake in the company, all of Carlyle’s ownership, and “ongoing financial interest in the future growth”.
Inon announces the D-200 strobe
Inon will ship their D-200 strobe on 8 September. Intended as a mId range strobe, it offers a guide number of 20 and an 110° beam angle underwater. Powered by 2 flash tubes in a T shape, the strobe has a dome lens to spread the its output and can only be triggered optically.
Canon announces EOS R System
Canon has formally announced their full frame mirrorless camera system featuring their new RF mount system. The first camera body, the EOS R, has a 30.3 MP CMOS sensor with a DIGIC 8 image processor. It has Dual Pixel AF and a native ISO range of 100 to 40,000. Recording is to a single SD card slot.
Episode 4 of Timor-Leste From Below has been released
Episode 4 of the Scubazoo web series Timor-Leste from Below has been released. This episode focuses on the Wawata Topu, the mermaids of Timor-Leste. “In a small village in the back of beyond a team of ladies are challenging stereotypes. Taking to the ocean to collect clams, shells and to spear reef fish, Bertie goes to learn more about the Wawata Topu (women divers), the mermaids of Timor-Leste.”

London’s Natural History Museum (NHM) has released a set of 14 of the highly commended images from the 2018 Wildlife Photographer of the Year contest.
Video: Aquatic Human II - BTS by Behind the Mask
Behind the Mask describes their ambitious project to film wild Atlantic spotted dolphins (Stenella frontalis) interacting with free divers and Seabob high-speed underwater scooters. The film, Aquatic Human II - Dolphins and Scooters was filmed in Bimini, Bahamas and in this article, Florian describes the technical and physical challenges of capturing sequences of fast moving wild animals and fast-moving humans in the ocean.
Indonesia Coral Reef guide released
Andrey Ryanskiy has published the latest in his series of photographic marine life guides. Covering the reefs of Indonesia, the new book features 203 pages and includes over 1,600 fishes, turtles, invertebrates and marine plants.
