Backscatter compares the Nikon D850 and Sony a7RIII
Underwater imaging retailer and Wetpixel Sponsor, Backscatter, has posted a detailed video comparison of the Nikon D850 and Sony a7RIII cameras. Both cameras were tested underwater by Backscatter CEO Jim Decker in Roatan and Little Cayman.

Japan slaughters 122 pregnant minke whales
The Sydney Morning Herald reports that International Whaling Commission has reported (pdf) that the Japanese whaling fleet killed 333 Antarctic minke whales (Balaenoptera bonaerensis) during last summer’s hunt. 122 of the whales killed were pregnant and 114 were immature. Japan justified the killings by claiming that they needed lethal sampling methods in order to sample age, size and stomach contents. (Image credit: Australian Customs and Border Protection Service)
Sony announces high resolution EVF
Sony has announced a new OLED electronic viewfinder (EVF) with 1.6 times the resolution of existing versions. The ECX339A OLED Microdisplay is a 0.5in. display with 1600 × 1200 resolution with a refresh rate of 240fps. Sony has managed to create a pixel pitch of 6.3µm in the EVF and to maintain the same level of power use as the previous model.

Infographic: Inside Coral Bleaching by bioGraphic
bioGraphic has posted an excellent infographic called “Inside Coral Bleaching”. The graphic was rendered from a 3D model that consisted of over 20,000 images captured primarily by scientists from the 100 Islands Challenge Team. The photogrammmetry was created using Agisoft Photoscan, Blender and Cycles with animations of fish and the coral polyps expelling their zooxanthellae algae added in post.
Fantasea announces UWL-400F conversion lens
Fantasea and AOI have announced the UWL-400F wide Angle conversion lens. Featuring a 52mm mounting thread, but supplied with the EyeDaptor M67-F52 lens adaptor, the lens offers an 120° FOV (with a 25mm lens) and will focus on its dome.
