Dominican Republic bans shark fishing
The Dominican Republic has announced a ban on the fishing and trading of sharks, rays, parrotfish and sea urchins within its waters. FIS has also reported that the trade of any derivate products, including import and export will be banned. The sharks fishing ban is for an indefinite period, whereas the other species have either a 2 or 5 year ban.
Underwater photo series brings awareness to ghost nets
Underwater photographer Jose Cano and performance artist Cristine Beggs collaborate to bring awareness to the problem of ghost nets. The pair worked together to produce underwater images that put Beggs and other models in uncomfortable looking situations with nets to represent the plague of ghost nets on ocean wildlife. The pair hopes that through these images change can be made.
Underwater photographer Ryo Minemizu wins 5th Nikkei National Geographic Photo Award
Underwater photographer Ryo Minemizu has won the 5th Annual Nikkei National Geographic Photo Award for his series titled The Secret World of Plankton. Minimize has spent the last 20 years diving and photographing larval ocean creatures off the coast of Japan. In that time he has perfected a technique that captures animals maturing from their larval stage to adult. After a high tide, once the sun goes down, Minemizu sets up 30 LED lights on tripods to attract the almost invisible organisms, waiting sometimes for hours at a time.

Millions of Pyrosomes have started appearing off the Pacific North-West
Millions of Pyrosomes, also known as “fire bodies”, have appeared off the west coast of North America stretching from the Pacific North-West to Alaska. Three years of un-precedented warm water off the west coast has finally given way to more expected cooler waters. But, what may have brought these typically more tropical visitors is unknown.
All proceeds from Lush’s “Shark Fin” Soap fund Rob Stewart’s Sharkwater: Extinction documentary
Lush has re-released their very popular “shark fin” soap in honor of World Ocean’s Day earlier this month. Additionally, 100% of all proceeds from this Lush product go Rob Stewart’s documentary Sharkwater:Extinction to help complete the project. Stewart tragically died in a diving accident earlier this year. This product hopes to bring awareness to the over 100 million sharks that are killed annually.

Canon provides explanation of Dual Pixel AutoFocus System
Canon has released a short video explaining their Dual Pixel AutoFocus system. This is an on sensor phase detection system, so is used when shooting either in Live View or video modes on several SLR models including EOS 70D, EOS 7D Mark II and EOS 5D Mark IV. It is also incorporated into several EOS Cinema models.
