Final Call: DUC Shootout 2017
The DUC Shootout is making a final call for entries. Entries must have been taken between 1 December 2016 to 31 May 2017 in Mozambique, South Africa or Namibia. The organisers are keen to get visiting divers to enter images: “If you visited South Africa between 1st of Dec 2016 and 31st of May 2017 to take underwater images be sure to check out South Africa national underwater shootout the DUC Shootout and enter your images.”
Full details of EOS C200 Cinema camera are leaked
The official specifications and press release for the Canon EOS C200 compact Cinema camera have been released. It is capable of recording the new Cinema RAW Light format at 4K DCI 50P and 4K UHD recording at 150Mbps to SD cards in MP4. It has a 4K Super 35mm CMOS sensor with an effective pixel count of 8.85M and a newly developed Dual DIGIC DV6 image processors giving a native ISO range of 100 to 102,400.
Google ceases support of Nik Plugins
In a banner on the Nik Collection site, owner Google has announced that it will be no longer be updating or adding new features to the Nik plugins. It is currently compatible with OS X 10.10, Windows Vista, 7 and 8, and Photoshop through to CC 2015, but as operating systems update, it is likely that the plugins will cease to work in the future.
Opinion: How to achieve great imagery
As underwater photographers and filmmakers, we all attempt to create stunning, memorable imagery. Often we seek to emulate well known image makers and the results that they achieve. The profusion of imagery available to viewers means that if our imagery is to be considered exceptional, it needs to be unique and technically perfect. Nikon announces DX 10-20 mm wide angle lens
Nikon has announced a 10-20mm rectilinear wide angle lens for cropped sensor (DX) cameras. It is equipped with Vibration Reduction and has a minimum focus distance of 22 cm (8.7 inches). The lens has a stepping AF motor that allows for quiet focusing. Performance behind a dome is uncertain at this point, please check back for reviews.
Nikon ships 8-15mm fisheye lens
Nikon is now shipping its new AF-S Fisheye 8-15mm f/3-4.5 ED lens. Compatible with both full frame (FX) and cropped sensor cameras, with circular fisheye at the 8 mm end on FX. Minimum focus distance is 16 cm (6 inches) so this lens should work well behind a dome. Suffice to say that Wetpixel will be reviewing it very soon!
Cruise Ship owners fined for reef damage
The operators of the cruise ship that struck the reef at Crossover off Kri, Raja Ampat in March have been fined Rp6 trillion (around US$450 million) according to Tempo. The Indonesian government is seeking this sum from the owners of the Caledonian Sky basing its calculation on four components to damages: ecosystem, economy and society, ecosystem rehabilitation costs and damage claim costs.
