Scott “Gutsy” Tuason is an underwater photographer with a recent book out called Blackwater and Open Blue. The book focuses on underwater photography at night in open ocean. Wetpixel sat down with Gutsy to ask him some questions about the book and this ever exciting form of underwater photography.
Field Review: UWTechnics External Optical TTL Converter
Wetpixel Editor Adam Hanlon presents a review of the UWTechnics External Optical TTL converter. Suitable for any housing that has an M14 port, the converter converts the electronic flash triggering signal from a camera’s hot shoe to an optical signal that can be used to fire strobes via a fiber optic cable. The review was carried out during the Gulen Nudibranch Safari. The converter can be used in both TTL and manual modes
Underwater photos snag top places in NG Nature Photographer of the Year contest
Winners of the National Geographic Nature Photographer of the Year 2016 contest have been announced. The grand prize this year has gone to an underwater photograph by Greg Lecoeur. The winners this year include include incredible images from above and below the water. Grand prize is a 10-day trip for two to the Galapagos Islands with National Geographic Expeditions.

Subal has announced their Navy line of housings. Designed for military use, they have an anti reflective matt finish and have a subdued handle strap. They are compatible with all Subal ports and accessories and can also be used with specialized options for housing telephoto lenses. The Navy line is available for cameras from Nikon, Canon, Leica, Sony, Panasonic, Olympus, Fuji and GoPro.
Adobe offers Keywording Tutorials
Adobe’s Lightroom Coffee Break’s latest episode is entitled “Using Keyword Sets.” In it, Adobe’s Benjamin Warde explains why Keyword Sets are limited to 9 keywords. In doing so, he reveals a tip that may well make key wording faster. In addition, Julieanne Kost offers more suggestion for speeding up keywording workflow.
Atomos announces Ninja Inferno Monitor/Recorder
Atomos has announced the release of the Ninja Inferno HDR 4K60p 10-bit 4:2:2 monitor recorder. Designed to allow the recording of 4K60p ProRes output over HDMI 2 from the recently shipped Panasonic GH5, it also offers HDR monitoring. Other compatible cameras include the Panasonic GH4, DVX200, HCX1000, UX180, HCX1, Sony FS7, Z100 and the JVC LS300.
PADI sells for $700 million
PADI has been purchased by an entity known as Mandarinfish Holding for $700 million US. PADI is the largest scuba diving training and certification organization in the world. To date PADI has issued more than 25 million certifications. Mandarinfish Holding is comprised of a group of wealthy families and endowments.
