Magic Lantern adds experimental firmware offering 4K RAW to EOS 5D Mark III
Magic Lantern has released an experimental build of their firmware that offers 4K RAW recording on the Canon EOS 5D Mark III. Also within the build is a Live View mode that shoots at 5796x3870 at 7.4 fps, even at faster shutter speeds. This will produce rolling shutter however. Magic Lantern point out that the current build has “plenty of bugs,” but expect that these will be worked out over time.
Apple confirms support for pro users
In a frank interview on TechCrunch Apple has provided some information regarding its plans to satisfy the demands of pro users. The company has been widely criticized for abandoning this sector of the market, with many pros porting their systems over to Windows. As of today, Apple is shipping two new Mac Pro models and have committed to releasing a whole new model, along with an external pro display in 2018.
A paper shows the positive impact of the marine reserve in Palau
A paper recently published in the scientific journal PLOS One shows the positive impact a marine reserve can have on a country. Two years ago the island nation of Palau established a marine reserve the size of California, 193,000 square miles, in its waters. No fishing or mining is allowed in the reserve.
Imaging party at ADEX 2017
Once again, Wetpixel joins forces with Scubacam and Sam’s Tours to host the ADEX Imaging party. It will held after the Big Blue Party on Friday 7 April. Paper studies fangblenny venom and its effects
A paper published in Current Biology examines the role, effects and evolution of the venom in Meiacanthus species fangblennies. It consists of three toxins, one of which causes a marked drop in blood pressure. Notably, the blennies only use this defensively and it has no application in their feeding.
Indonesia sinks a further 81 illegal fishing vessels
The Indonesian government has deliberately sunk a further 81 foreign vessels that had been caught illegally fishing in the nation’s waters. The Bangkok Post reports that the boats were of Vietnamese, Philippine, Malaysian and Thai origin. The ships were blown up at sea in 12 locations around the archipelago on Saturday. Review: SAGA Trio macro lens system
SAGA are shipping their Trio macro lens. It is essentially a housing containing +5 and +10 lens elements, which can be actuated via two levers. Attached via an M67 thread, the Trio offers 4 magnification options. Wetpixel were able to test the lens system during their macro workshop in Indonesia and the Gulen Nudibranch Safari.
Alien Skin announces update to Exposure X2
Alien Skin has announced an update to their Exposure X2 non-destructive RAW photo editor. It adds the ability to add effect layers that can be “copied and pasted, turned on and off individually, applied to multiple images, and more.” In addition, the update includes new presets, high DPI monitor support, quick export options and additional camera and lens support.
