New Anglerfish discovered in wake of Deepwater Horizon
A new species of the infamous anglerfish has been described. Three specimens were collected in the wake of the Deepwater Horizon spill at a depth between 2,625 and 4,265 feet below the surface.

Earth Touch’s Wild Oceans channel has posted some video shot by Stewart Whitfield of juvenile fish hiding under the bell of a jellyfish and using its stinging tentacles as protection from circling predators.
Free diving in Raja Ampat
Due to medical circumstances, Wetpixel member Fred Bavendam has had to leave the Kri Eco Resort in Raja Ampat early. He has kindly offered his remaining time at the resort to any member of the Wetpixel community that is able to take advantage of it for free. Recsea releases housing for Canon EOS 7D Mark II
Recsea are shipping their housing for the Canon EOS 7D Mark II SLR. Constructed from aluminum, it has a rear control dial with a push button function. Recsea support a wide range of lenses and there are a range of accessories available, including the new Recsea Airlock Vacuum System RAV-S2.

Underwater photo takes top prize in Royal Society Publishing photo competition
This was the first year of the Royal Society Publishing photography competition, a competition meant to “celebrate the power of photography to communicate science”. The competition is sponsored by Proceedings of the Royal Society B and Biology Letters and honors the 350th anniversary of the scientific journal.

Wetpixel’s Ask the Pros column returns with an amazing round-up of macro shooting ideas and techniques. The subject is a vast one, and it was difficult to refine it to a manageable number of questions, so it is likely that we will revisit the topic at a later date.
Effort made to protect smelt when SF Bay Bridge was detonated
The largest pier of the old San Francisco Bay Bridge was detonated in a controlled explosion saturday. Caltrans imploded the upper portion of the pier with 22,000 pounds of dynamite at 7:17am, a time when officials hoped to take advantage of light traffic, slack tide and limited smelt. That’s right, a concerted effort was made to protect the endangered longfin smelt.
