Wetpixel coverage from DEMA 2012
Wetpixel begins its annual coverage of the DEMA show from Las Vegas. Wetpixel Publisher Eric Cheng, Editor Adam Hanlon and Moderators Abi Smigel Mullens and Dave Burroughs will be posting up to date reports on what is going on at the show over the next four days. DEMA is the diving industry’s traditional showcase for new products, and this includes those companies involved with underwater imaging, so it is likely that we will be covering many new product releases. Please keep checking back here to see the updates.
For those of you at DEMA, please come and say hi to us, and don’t forget the Wetpixel/DivePhotoGuide party on Thursday night.
Aquatica introduces the Water Wizard
Aquatica has announced the release of the Water Wizard housing for the Pocket Wizard Plus III wireless flash triggers. The Pocket Wizard triggers are widely used in studio and specialized photography applications. As the wireless signal does not transmit through water, the triggers must float at the surface or be supported in some way. Aquatica has added the ability to attach floatation from their TLC system and multiple tripod screw attachment points. In addition to triggering flashes, the units can also be used to remotely trigger the camera’s shutter.
The Water Wizard will be available soon at a retail price of $209.
Mozambique creates MPAs
Mozambique has announced the creation of two new Marine Protected Areas (MPAs), reports Mongabay. The two areas consist of 10,411 square kilometers (4,020 square miles) of coastal marine waters and are called the Primeiras and Segundas Archipelago. They represent the biggest MPAs on the continent and include ten islands, mangrove forests, coral reefs, and seagrass ecosystems.
New mutualistic relationship discovered
The journal Science has published a paper by Danielle L. Dixson and Mark E. Hay that shows that when Acropora nasuta coral is attacked by toxic seaweeds, it responds by chemically cuing symbiotic goby fishes (Gobiodon histrio or Paragobiodon echinocephalus) to remove the toxic seaweed (Chlorodesmis fastigiata). Their experiments showed that within minutes of seaweed contact, the coral releases a chemical that recruits gobies to trim the seaweed and dramatically reduce potential damage to the coral. In turn, the chemically defended gobies become more toxic after consumption of this noxious alga, deterring predators.
Nauticam announces the NA-1DX housing
Nauticam has revealed the details of their new housing for the Canon EOS-1D X and EOS-1D C cameras. The NA-1DX’s top and rear command dials are located on the side of housing with a new double paddle lever assembly controlling both the record and the AF-ON features. ISO control is via a lever on the right hand side. Quick mode and Set buttons are accessed via piano key controls and the housing offers full control of the camera’s joystick.
The NA-1DX will be available from 20 November at a retail price of $5,100.
Adobe announces Lightroom and Camera Raw release candidates
Adobe has announced the availability of release candidate versions of Lightroom 4.3 and Camera Raw 7.3. Both updates offer support for new cameras including the Canon Powershots S110, G15 and SX50HS, Nikon D600, Olympus PEN E-PL5 and E-PM2, Olympus XZ-2 and Panasonic GH3. Lightroom now supports HiDPI (retina) displays in its Develop module. There are also numerous bug fixes in both releases.
Lightroom 4.3 and Camera Raw 7.3 are available as free downloads on Adobe Labs. The “release candidate” label indicates that these updates are stable but need additional community testing before final release.
Wetpixel/DivePhotoGuide Party @ DEMA 2012
The famous, fabulous and fantastic annual Wetpixel/DivePhotoGuide Imaging party is, once again, being held during DEMA. The event will be in The Virginia City Room, Flamingo Hotel, Vegas on Thursday, November 15 from 8-11PM. We had an amazing gathering in Orlando in 2011, and expect that this one will be even better! Thanks to our wonderful sponsors Backscatter, Nauticam, Reef Photo, Scuba Diver TTL, Scubapix and Zen Underwater, there will be a limited, but generous amount, of free drinks and some dry snacks being served, as well as a full paid bar when the freebies run out.
We hope that as many Wetpixel members as possible will be able to attend and if you need more information, please find Abi, Dave or Adam on the show floor. For those that sadly can’t be there, we will be publishing photographs and details of the evening’s antics on here, so please check back soon.
