The Conception Tragedy: Update
Wetpixel offers an update to the events surrounding the Conception tragedy: The wreck has now been raised, and the final victim’s remains have been recovered, with authorities having released the names of 27 of our scuba sisters and brothers that perished so far. Our hearts go out to their friends and families. Stressing that the cause of the fire aboard the Conception is still undetermined, the Coast Gaurd has released an advisory for passenger boat operators that mentions the issues around charging batteries among other points.
Lacie announces SSD drives
Lacie has announced three new rugged SSD drives. The Rugged SSD Pro offers 2800MB/s speeds via Thunderbolt 3. Its Thunderbolt connection is backward compatible with USB 3.1. The Rugged SSD offer speeds of up to 950 MB/s. Lastly, the Rugged® BOSS SSD offers a Lightning connection (along with USB A) and an SD card reader.
Ikelite announces housing for Canon G5 X Mark II
Ikelite will be shipping their housing for the Canon G5 X Mark II compact camera at the end of this week. It has an extendable shutter release lever, soft-touch knob, a port for a vacuum system and 2 fiber optic ports.
Ocean Art 2019 is open for entries
The 2019 Ocean Art contest is open for entries. It is offering 16 categories and the deadline for entries is 30 November. Winners in each category can rank their preferred prizes.
Editorial: An update to the Conception tragedy
Wetpixel offers an editorial about the fire and subsequent sinking of the dive boat Conception on 03 September, which resulted in a terrible loss of life. Our hearts go out to those affected by this tragedy. The primary goal is to update the Wetpixel community to the process of the ongoing investigation and to show solidarity with the Californian dive community in their time of grief. A secondary goal is to try and dispell many of the incorrect rumors about the cause of the tragedy and to prevent any knee jerk reactions.
Canon announces EOS C500 Mark II
Canon has announced their long-awaited update to the EOS C500 cinema camera The C500 Mark II has a 5.9K 60p Full Frame sensor, user interchangeable lens mounts, 5 axis image stabilization, and a new DIGIC 7 image processor. It can record Cinema RAW lite to internal CFexpress media card.
Results: Monterey Shootout 2019
Hosted by Backscatter and NCUPS, the 2019 Monterey Shootout was held from 22 to 25 August. It attracted 172 contestants to dive in excellent conditions in Monterey Bay and socialize at the infamous Backscatter party that rounds off the event. Birds Head Manta ID Contest open for entries
The Bird’s Head Seascape is celebrating one thousand entries to its manta ID database by launching a contest that is seeking to award the individual that submits the most distinct manta ID image. Prizes include the honor of naming an animal and a “manta-tactic” liveaboard trip on Pindito.
