Video: NASA Neutral Buoyancy Lab by Peter Lightowler
NASA’s Neutral Buoyancy Lab (NBL) in Houston, Texas is a large freshwater pool that is used to train astronauts to perform tasks in a weightless, or in this case, neutral buoyancy environment. Gates and RED recently ran a 3-day STO course, training the NBL team in using their housings and cameras to document the training. Peter Lightowler of Down Under Aquatic Imaging also provided an introduction to video editing using Davinci Resolve. In addition, he produced this amazing short film.
Workflow improvements in Photoshop CC
Lightroom and Photoshop guru Erin Quigley has pointed out 2 important changes in the most recent version of Photoshop CC. Release 20.0.5 has options to revert the constrain proportions function by holding the shift key and also not require the shift key in order to toggle through tool options.
Pixelmator Pro offers native editing in Apple Photos
Version 1.4 (Hummingbird) of photo editing app Pixelmator Pro has been released and adds an extension that allows the app to be opened from within the Apple Photos app. It also offers new Zoom and Crop tools along with new features and improvements.
Sony announces RX100 VII
Sony has released details of their RX100 VII compact camera. It features a 1” (25mm) 20.1 MP sensor with the AF system for the Alpha 9 mirrorless camera. Video is 4K, with no pixel binning and in Hybrid Log-Gamma, S-Gamut3.Cine, S-Log3, S-Gamut3 and S-Log3. It also features specific stabilization for 4K video.
Wetpixel forums are back
I am pleased to report that the Wetpixel forums are back up and running. There are still some bugs that need working out, and we do need the community to go and have a look at the forums to see if there is anything that we have missed! There is a thread where folks are reporting any issues they have or notice so that our amazing developer Tom St. George can investigate and solve them. So far so good!

We are changing our servers and updating the site in order to provide some exciting new features and functionality over the next few months. Many apologies for the inconvenience, but this means that we will need to take the forums offline for around 24 hours. We plan to do so from 1500 GMT (1100 ET/0800 PT) today, Wednesday 24 July and hope to have everything back up and running by the same time on Thursday 25 July.
Book release: The World Beneath by Richard Smith
Wetpixel member, marine biologist, and underwater photographer, Dr. Richard Smith will be publishing his first book “The World Beneath” in September. It has 320 pages with 333 images, and “shows the striking colors of the sea creatures, and gives a rare up-close view of their world.”
Gates announces updated housing for Arri Alexa Mini
he Gates Underwater Products Mini LF Housing for the Alexa Mini and Mini LF has been announced. It offers support for a versatile choice of lenses and 12 assignable buttons. It ships with a Starlite ST5 monitor, the Gates Seal Check vacuum system and has adjustable grips.
