Hundreds of endangered olive ridley sea turtles found dead from fishing net off Mexico
Mexico’s federal agency for environmental protection announced Tuesday of this week that it found over 300 dead olive ridley sea turtles. The turtles died from apparent entanglement with a ghost fishing net off the state of Oaxaca, Mexico. The news comes just a week after news of another large mortality event of mostly olive ridley sea turtles off Mexico. Although these events should cause some concern, scientists believe it is just a small percentage of the tens of thousands of olive ridley turtles nesting off southern Mexico every year.
Lightroom Coffee Break: Page Down to Inspect images
enjamin Warde posted a tutorial about using the Page Down key to inspect images on Adobe’s Lightroom Coffee Break. Although he aims this at removing sensor dust, for underwater photographers, the technique works equally as well at removing backscatter within Lightroom. (Hint: Use the “Visualize Spots” function within the Spot Removal Tool).
Phase One has announced the 150MP XF IQ4 camera system
Phase One has announced their XF IQ4 camera system. This comprises the IQ4 150MP, the IQ4 100MP Trichromatic, and the IQ4 150MP Achromatic each of which offers internal RAW processing using an integrated version of Capture One. Tethering is available via wireless, USB-C, and Ethernet, with in-camera storage on XQD and SD memory cards.
Sony announces Tough SD card range
Sony has announced a range of SD cards that are being billed as being the toughest and fastest available. Waterproof to the IPX8 standard and featuring a write speed of 299MB/s, the cards feature a redesigned one-piece molding structure. The connector ribs and write protect switch have been removed. Available capacities are 32GB, 64GB and 128GB.
Underwater photographer’s close encounter with great white captured on 360 video
Underwater photographer Keith Ellenbogen had an up close and personal encounter with a 16-foot great white shark while filming a humpback whale for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). The encounter occurred approximately 25-miles off the coast of Boston while Ellenbogen was free diving. The meeting was captured entirely on 360 video.
Season 3 of Tales by Light goes to air
Canon Australia has announced that season 3 of the Tales by Light photography series is airing on Australia’s Network 10. The series focuses on individual photographers who are “motivated to harness the power of images to draw attention to and inspire the world to protect some of the most beautiful and vulnerable aspects of our world: children, the ocean and Australian Indigenous culture.”
Episode 3 of Timor Leste from Below has been released
Episode 3 of the Scubazoo web series Timor Leste from Below has been released. This episode is titled The Most Biodiverse Reef on Earth: Atauro Island. “Is this the most biodiverse coral reef on Earth? Scuba diving Atauro island. A team of biodiversity boffins from Conservation International recently concluded that the coral reefs surrounding Atauro Island may be the richest of anywhere in the world. To put this theory to the test Bertie goes on a mission to photograph all the resident reef fish.”
Nikon announces XQD cards
Nikon Japan has announced two Nikon branded XQD cards. The cards have 64GB and 120Gb capacities, have maximum read speeds of 440MB/s and write speeds of 400MB/s.
