PetaPixel features underwater images of plankton
PetaPixel has featured the images of Japanese underwater photographer Ryo Minemizu. Minemizu’s images focus on microscopic plankton that rise to the surface during blackwater dives. The images are part of a solo exhibition entitled Jewels in the Night Sea that will be touring Japan later this year. The 40 images are featured and supported by Canon galleries in Japan.
Ikelite announces Nikon TTL converters
Ikelite has announced their DS Link TTL converters for Nikon cameras with DS series strobes. Available with either Nikonos or Ikelite connection it features an electronic connection and the user can switch between manual and TTL modes. It also supports camera EV compensation and rear curtain sync.
Florida declares state of emergency due to red tide
Florida has declared a state of emergency due to the bloom of toxic red algae that has killed numerous animals and has affected tourism. Governor Scott promised $1.5 million in funds to help seven counties that stretches from Tampa to the Everglades. Animals killed and washed ashore have included fish, turtles, eels, porpoises, manatees, and one 26-foot whale shark. Difficulty breathing by humans is another little known symptom of red tides, due to blooms of Karenia brevis.
DaVinci Resolve 15 available
Version 15 of DaVinci Resolve is now out of beta and shipping. Available as a free upgrade for existing users and as a free or paid for version, Resolve 15 offers editing, visual effects, motion graphics, color correction and audio post-production software.
Trailer for Sharkwater Extinction has been released
The trailer for the film Sharkwater Extinction has been released. The film is the project and legacy of filmmaker Rob Stewart, who tragically died in 2017. The release date for the documentary film is October 5th, 2018. The film is a follow-up to the 2006 film Sharkwater, which was written and directed by Stewart.
Nikon re-registers Nikonos trademark
Wetpixel member Geo has kindly pointed out an interesting development from Nikon. Nikon Rumors notes that the company has just re-registered the trademark “NIKONOS.” This had expired in 2008. Of course, this may simply reflect an attempt to preserve apart of Nikon’s heritage, but equally, it may be a sign that the company is considering the underwater market in its product development plans.

The 2018 Wetpixel Whale Sharks trip is underway! Every year hundreds of whale sharks (Rhincodon typus) gather North of the island of Isla Mujeres, close to Cancun, Mexico. The aggregation provides one of the most amazing natural spectacles in the underwater world. We will be posting daily reports, so please check back often
