John Ellerbrock: The Origins of Seal Check
Gates Underwater Product’s John Ellerbrock provides a brief history of vacuum seal checking devices. Now consider de rigueur on most new housing purchases, it is interesting to note that the recent surge in their popularity has suggested that they are a new idea. John points out that filmmakers have been vacuum checking their housings for at least 70 years.
The olympic underwater photographers are robots
The stunning underwater images coming out of the Rio Olympics give an interesting view into the sports of swimming, diving and synchronized diving. The Rio Olympics are the first year where the underwater cameras are actually robots. Getty photographers have two Canon 1DX Mark II cameras in remotely controlled housings that are operated by photographers above water during competitive events.
Sea&Sea announces housing for EOS 80D
Sea&Sea has released details of their housing for the Canon EOS 80D SLR camera. The MDX-80D housing has an “improved underwater weight” and the camera’s multi controller is accessible via a control. the main control dials are equipped with damper springs for secure operation. Strobe triggering is via fiber optic.

Adobe has added a further series of 60 second tutorials to their Lightroom Coffee Break series. The latest tips include using keyword sets, cropping in lights out mode, showing additional information on grid cells and using long press keyboard shortcuts.
Casio announces waterproof 360° camera
Casio has announced a 360° camera that has a detachable lens unit featuring a 1.35mm lens that offers a fisheye capture equivalent to a 13.4mm lens on a full frame camera. The Casio EX-FR200 offers 4 capture modes: A 180° 3888 x 3888px fisheye spherical view, an unwrapped 360° 7456x1864 panorama, a super-wide 208° image or, when two lenses are combined back to back, full 360°. It also captures 4K video at 30fps in 180° mode and the camera is waterproof to around 3m (IPX8).
Tony Wu: A Gathering of Giants
Underwater photographer and “whale whisperer” Tony Wu has written a personal account of his encounter with a large breeding aggregation of sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus) on bioGraphic. He notes that the reason for these large gatherings are still unknown and that despite whaling no longer being a threat to their survival, ship strikes and plastic ingestion still makes the species’s survival uncertain.
Here’s your chance to name a new species of nudibranch
A new species of nudibranch has been discovered off the coast of Western Australia and the Western Australia Museum and RN’s Off Track want your help in naming the species. Dr. Nerida Wilson discovered the critter while scuba diving off the north-western portion of WA. The genus name of the nudibranch is Moridilla, so the chosen species name will have to go with that genus name.
Gates releases housing for Canon ME20 low light camera
Gates Underwater Products has announced the release of their housing for the Canon ME20F-SH low light camera. It is integrated with the Transvision StarliteHD OLED monitor in the Gates Starlite ST5 housing. The system is designed to offer the ability to capture low light scenes using natural lighting underwater like coral spawning, natural bioluminescence and predator activity at night.
