Filmmaker Kay Burn Lim has posted a stunning reel featuring macro footage shot with the Sony a7S camera in the Lembeh Straits, Indonesia. Due to the camera being unable to record 4K internally, it is in 1080p at 30fps.
Activists take legal action to prevent mining on Bangka
Off the north end of Sulawesi Island in the Coral Triangle lies Bangka. Bangka borders a marine park that contains two world famous dive sites, Bunaken and Lembeh. This tiny island is at the heart of a conflict between a mining company hoping to extract iron ore and activists and dive operators who say that the impact to the surrounding coral reefs would be devastating.
Preview of new film by Sandro Bocci
This preview film, titled “Meanwhile”, is part of an upcoming, non-speaking Italian film by Sandro Bocci. The full length “Porgrave”, which depicts macro timelapses of corals and other aquatic life filmed under ultraviolet light, will be released in late 2015.
Nikon announces the Nikon 1 J5
Nikon has announced the Nikon 1 J5 mirrorless camera. It features a 20.8 Megapixel backside illuminated sensor, a native ISO range of 160–12800 and a hybrid phase and contrast AF system with 105 phase detection points. A command dial has been added to its controls, and an assignable Fn button. Lastly, it can shoot Ultra HD footage (3840 x 2160/15p).
Group threatens lawsuit to keep people away from manatees
Well known manatee hot spot, Three Sister’s Springs in Crystal River, Florida is at the center of a controversy between the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and a group looking to ban people from interacting with manatees during the cold winter months.
Last spaces on Doubilet workshop available
Three of the “big guns” in underwater imaging, David Doubilet, Jen Hayes and Hal Silverman have two spaces left on their workshop at Sunset House on Grand Cayman from 16 to 23 May. Each day of the event will feature lectures, diving/shooting, post-production and an evening presentation of the day’s work.
Late availability: Wetpixel Oceanic Whitetips 2015
We have a few spaces available for the Wetpixel Oceanic Sharks trip. Reports from our operators on Cat Island, Epic Diving, are saying that there are numerous oceanic whitetips (Carcharhinus longimanus) around and interacting with their groups at the moment. Video: Moray and reef fish hunt together
Wild Oceans returns to South Africa in this week’s episode. Shot at Sodwana Bay, Kwazulu Natal, it features a co operative hunt between a moray eel and some interesting footage of a frogfish “hopping” around underwater. It also features the standard adrenaline filled boat launch off Jesser Point!
